A software developer has to think(imagine) various situations that could arise and code (make the machine respond) in a proper way. More situations you can imagine and get the response developed will make the software better.The imagination comes, as per my observation, in following order(ordered from highest impact)

Visualising on screens
Listening
Next step of coding is a way of communicating to the machine(or compiler or operating system). You need to know software languages to communicate.
My methodology is to take the real world examples and program it in Java.
