About Madelein
After I completed Grade 12 I spent 8 months in the United States as an Au Pair. Thereafter I enrolled at the University of Pretoria for a BA (Hed) degree with English as main subject. Due to financial constraints I did not complete my teaching degree. With the knowledge I gained during my two years of studying the English Language I tutored High School Students (English as second Language).
In 2000 I had the opportunity to become involved in the field of GIS. I started my career as a Learner GIS Technician in 2000 and I am currently a GIS Specialist. I was fortunate to be involved not only in the practical field, but also as a trainer. Being responsible for the training of all Planning and Building Control Development GIS staff at the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality is a highlight of my career. It will be an honor to share the knowledge and love that I have. I am skilled in the use of ArcMap as well as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.

When you are my student I strive to get to know you, to understand how you learn. One of the very first tasks is to get to know what interests you and how we can apply that to your studies. You and I will engage to ensure that we are actively learning and that it stays interesting! We will set goals: 1) Where am I going? 2) How will I get there? 3) When will I know I’ve arrived? We will use the many available online tools to connect i.e Zoom to chat and Google Classroom to share material and complete assignments.
I will encourage you in an ongoing process of self-assessment and reflection. You should get comfortable thinking about your learning and we will evaluate the development of specific skills. Your learning is a team effort. My job is not only teaching you the facts but also to encourage you to become self assured in your subject.
