About Melissa
I have 9 years of teaching experience and hold a Bachelor of Education. Throughout my coaching career, I have worked with beginners, school players, club competitors, and tournament participants who wanted to improve both their chess skills and strategic thinking. I enjoy helping students discover that every game is an opportunity to develop patience, concentration, confidence, and logical decision-making.
One student came to me after repeatedly losing games because of poor time management during tournaments. Together we improved calculation habits, practical endgame skills, and decision-making under time pressure through regular training sessions and tournament simulations. After several months, the student became much more confident, improved tournament results, and achieved a significant increase in playing strength.
I believe chess should be challenging, enjoyable, and rewarding for every learner regardless of experience. My coaching encourages curiosity, disciplined practice, careful analysis, and independent thinking while creating a positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning from mistakes. Watching learners become stronger players and more confident thinkers is the most satisfying part of my profession.
Outside coaching, I enjoy analyzing classical grandmaster games, studying modern tournament strategies, solving advanced tactical studies, and exploring new coaching techniques that make learning more engaging. These activities help me introduce fresh ideas and practical tournament knowledge into every lesson. I would be delighted to help you strengthen your chess skills, improve your strategic understanding, and achieve your personal chess goals.

I begin by learning about each student's playing experience, confidence level, and personal goals before preparing a customized training plan. This allows every lesson to focus on meaningful improvement while keeping learning enjoyable and motivating. My coaching combines strategy, tactics, practical games, and detailed feedback to help students become complete chess players.
Opening lessons teach students how to develop pieces efficiently, control the center, protect the king, and recognize common strategic ideas instead of memorizing long move sequences. Middlegame training focuses on tactical combinations, piece coordination, positional planning, pawn structures, attacking opportunities, and defensive techniques through carefully selected examples. Students gradually learn how to evaluate positions and choose the strongest plans with greater confidence.
Endgame sessions develop practical knowledge of king and pawn endings, rook endgames, minor-piece endings, opposition, passed pawns, and conversion techniques that frequently decide tournament games. Tactical puzzles strengthen visualization, calculation, and pattern recognition while encouraging students to think carefully before every move. Every practice game is reviewed in detail so learners understand both successful decisions and mistakes that can be improved.
Students preparing for school tournaments, club championships, online competitions, district events, national championships, or FIDE-rated tournaments receive personalized coaching supported by structured practice schedules, tournament preparation, and continuous performance reviews. I regularly adjust lessons according to each student's progress while providing practical exercises that encourage consistent improvement and long-term success.
