About Jem

I am an online tutor supporting children with the above difficulties, should they need that extra push or long-term support. I have 5 years' experience working in a primary school setting supporting children age 5 - 11 with academic support. I am CELTA qualified to teach English and have supported adults and children in a training and educational environment for 14 years. I started supporting adults with learning difficulties initially after completing my degree. I have also completed a CACHE - Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF). My sole focus now is to support those who need a little extra support outside of their school environment to help them shine. During my years in primary education, I taught/supported children in both groups and on a 1-1 basis, as well as whole class teaching (30 children). I supported children who found they had barriers to learning specific subjects or had barriers to learning, diagnosed and undiagnosed. I loved supporting children and giving them that extra support they needed for their abilities to show, helping them build coping mechanisms to learning along with building their confidence. I taught maths interventions to children and supported reading and writing through Fisher Foundation Trust and Words first, supporting those children without any reading or word knowledge and those who just needed my support to help them progress that little bit further. I also tutor spelling and phonics, basing these on age or learning level. Phonics is a huge part of learning, and without this knowledge, children can struggle, especially with reading, spelling, and writing. Completing this role and seeing how the support I offer builds the children's confidence and ability, enabling them to participate with said confidence in their own classroom with their peers makes teaching worthwhile, which is why I have chosen to support children online, focusing my attention on those that need it most.

I base my classes on the child's needs and specific interests. I do this by chatting to your child informally on the first meet and gauging a level of learning and understanding, asking questions related to the topic. I believe each lesson should be student-focused, focusing on the learner, not the learner listening to me speak. Teaching this way gives the learner a chance to practice more and put learning into action, supporting long and short-term memory. Maths ages 5-11, looking at the child’s specific needs and interests being guided by the child and use of authentic learning and the curriculum. Phonics, helping children understand the digraphs, trigraphs, and phonemes that make up the sounds in the English language, in turn supporting spelling, writing, and reading. Teaching these in phases. Guided by the child and previous knowledge, pre-testing of sounds will show areas that we need to concentrate on. Words first – For lower-level learners, those who know none or very few words of the English language, this teaching style uses images and rote learning (repetition) along with games, tasks, and reading to progress through the course. This course is done at the pace of the individual child but has a specific start and end. Fischer Foundation Trust – reading, spelling, and phonics based. This course is a good follow-on from Words first or to support a child’s progress. Each stage of this comes from the initial testing to see where your child is currently and progressing from there. This course has a start and end.
