About Gabriel

Hello! Welcome to ¿HABLAS ESPAÑOL?!

I’m Gabriel Fontoura Motta, an actor, educator, researcher, and Spanish teacher. I am an Official Ambassador of the LED Prize, an initiative by Globo, and I develop projects related to education, communication, culture, and inclusion.

I’m Brazilian, from Porto Alegre, Brazil, and I have been speaking Spanish for more than 16 years. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel). I also hold a Master’s degree in Performing Arts from Unicamp, where my research focused on Spanish language teaching and the use of theatre in education for people over 60. During my academic training, I studied at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and at Instituto Cervantes.

Spanish for real life

In my classes, you don’t just learn grammar. You learn how to understand, listen, think, write, and speak in Spanish, developing communication skills, confidence, and independence.

I work with different varieties of Spanish and cultural references from across the Spanish-speaking world, always adapting lessons to your goals: starting from scratch, traveling, working, studying, preparing for a certification exam, improving your conversation skills, or simply becoming more comfortable speaking Spanish.

And yes: Portuñol can be a great starting point. From there, we gradually build more accurate and natural communication, without judgment.

A methodology built through practice

My experience brings together language, theatre, communication, and education. Between 2022 and 2023, I developed the ¿HABLAS ESPAÑOL? project at Unicamp with students over 60, over three semesters and more than 100 hours of classes.

This research led to my master’s dissertation and also to the audio drama Los Ciegos (1890–2023), created with students who had never spoken Spanish before. The work has been presented and published in different academic contexts, including Instituto Cervantes in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2025, I was a finalist for the cRio ESPM Award, and in 2026 I received a grant through ECOAR, a Co.liga and Fundação Roberto Marinho initiative, for the project A Hora das Estrelas: Jovens Narrativas em Abrigos Digitais.

Teaching experience

I have taught Spanish to different audiences and through different institutions, including:

Instituto Verbalis (SC) – Spanish A1, A2 and B1;
Aliança América Idiomas (SP) – Spanish A1, A2 and B1;
English Rápido (BA) – Spanish A1, A2 and B1;
Fala Education (SP) – Spanish A1, A2 and B1;
Instituto World Opportunity (MG) – Spanish A1, A2 and B1;
Unicamp – universIDADE program – Spanish for students over 60;
Instituto Cultural São Francisco de Assis (RS) – Spanish teacher.

I have also developed artistic and academic projects involving Spanish with Venezuelan immigrants and refugees, people over 60, and other audiences in educational and cultural contexts.

Today, I teach online and in person to Brazilian and international students, always taking each student's goals, experience, and current needs into account.

Here, Spanish is more than a subject. It is a tool for communication, expression, independence, and connection.

Academic background and research: Master’s degree in Performing Arts (Unicamp), Bachelor’s student in Spanish Language and Literature (UFPel), Humanities studies at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, DELE C1, and training at Instituto Cervantes.

Spanish Lessons: Grammar, Conversation, Reading, Writing and Listening
Learning Spanish can be a lively, practical experience connected to the world around us. In my lessons, we work with the language through real communication situations, culture, current events and each student's interests.
The goal is to develop the four essential Spanish skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, while also working on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and the different varieties of the Spanish-speaking world.
What are the lessons like?
Personalized methodology
Each lesson is adapted to your level, goals and interests. We can work on Spanish for travel, work, academic purposes, conversation, certification exams, tests or simply to become more independent in the language.
Real-world Spanish
We use authentic materials in Spanish, such as news articles, podcasts, videos, music, social media, newsletters and texts from different countries. This allows you to come into contact with accents, expressions and ways of speaking that actually exist across the Spanish-speaking world.
Applied grammar
Grammar is not taught as a list of isolated rules. It is explored within real contexts so that you understand not only how a structure works, but also when and why to use it.
Conversation and confidence
Speaking practice starts from the beginning, always respecting the student's level. I use theatre and communication techniques to develop spontaneity, pronunciation, expression and confidence when speaking Spanish.
Current events and culture
News and events from the Spanish-speaking world can be used as starting points for conversation, critical reading and vocabulary development. Spanish is a plural language, spoken across different countries, cultures and contexts.
Levels
A1 – Beginner
For students starting from scratch. Introductions, basic vocabulary, essential structures, everyday situations, reading, writing and listening comprehension.
A2 – Elementary/Intermediate
Expansion of vocabulary and grammatical structures, conversations about personal experiences, text comprehension and development of writing skills.
B1 – Intermediate
Greater independence in conversation, argumentation and expressing opinions. We work with different accents, registers, texts and communication situations.
B2 – Upper-Intermediate
Development of fluency, grammatical accuracy and oral and written production. We use journalistic, academic and literary texts, as well as debates and simulations.
C1 – Advanced
Focus on complex argumentation, critical reading, advanced writing and communication in academic, professional and creative contexts.
I can also help you prepare for:
DELE and other Spanish exams;
ENEM and other tests;
interviews and professional presentations;
travel and everyday situations;
conversation;
academic and professional Spanish;
developing writing and listening skills.
Format
Lessons are available online or in person, depending on availability and location.
For in-person lessons, I teach in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, at the student's location. I am also available for travel and other arrangements agreed upon in advance.
For online lessons, we use video calls and digital materials while maintaining the same individualized approach.
What makes my lessons different?
My experience as an actor, educator and researcher directly influences the way I teach Spanish. I use expression, communication and theatre games whenever they can help students develop spontaneity and confidence, but Spanish is always at the center of the lesson.
The idea is simple: learn the language so you can use it in the real world.
From the first “hola” to more complex conversations, we build your Spanish gradually, practically and according to your needs.
