Your approach to private teaching of reading:
1. Assessment first
Start with a quick diagnostic to find the learner’s level: decoding skills, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. For private lessons, this means listening to them read aloud, asking questions about a short text, and identifying specific gaps rather than using a one-size-fits-all plan.
2. Phonics + Meaning together
For learners struggling with basics, you’d focus on phonics and word recognition. For more advanced learners, you shift to comprehension strategies – predicting, summarising, questioning the text. You’ve worked with diverse learners in Malta, so adapting materials to the learner’s first language and cultural context is key.
3. Structured but engaging lessons
A typical 1-to-1 session would follow:Warm-up: review sounds/sight words or vocabulary from last time Reading practice: guided reading of a level-appropriate text, aloud and silently Comprehension: ask literal, inferential, and personal response questions Application: learner retells, writes a short response, or applies new vocabulary
4. Confidence building
In private teaching, progress is faster when anxiety is low. Your experience in Ghana and with Kopin adult learners means you likely use a lot of encouragement, error correction that doesn’t interrupt fluency, and texts that connect to the learner’s interests or needs – e.g., job-related reading for adults.5. Clear goals + feedback to the learner/parent
Set a specific target each month: e.g., “read 80 wpm with 90% accuracy” or “answer inferential questions independently”. Give regular feedback so the learner sees progress
