About Oliver
I take a professional, reliable approach to every lesson — you can expect punctuality, clear communication, and lessons that are planned in advance rather than improvised on the spot.
Preparation: I ask for a short introductory chat (or a quick message) before the first lesson so I can understand the student's current level, goals, and any exam board or coursework requirements. This means the very first session is useful, not just an assessment.
Materials: I provide all resources, backing tracks, and DAW project files needed for lessons; students just need access to a laptop with the relevant software.
Communication: I'm happy to update parents/guardians on progress after lessons if that's helpful, and I respond to messages within 48 hours.
Flexibility: If a student needs to reschedule, I ask for as much notice as possible and I'm generally able to accommodate changes.

My Approach to Tutoring
I tutor Music and Music Technology for A-Level/GCSE, helping you build both practical musicianship and technical skills. My goal is to make lessons feel less like a classroom and more like a creative session. Students learn best when they're actually making something, not just absorbing theory.
Techniques & Methodology
Project-based learning: rather than teaching concepts in isolation, I anchor lessons around a piece the student is writing, producing, or performing — theory and technique get introduced as tools to solve a real creative problem.
Balanced coverage: I split time between practical skills (performance, composition, ear training, music theory) and technical skills (composing and producing using Logic and/or Sibelius, recording, mixing, sound design), tailored to what the student's course or interests need.
Exam-focused support: for students working towards GCSE/A-Level music or music tech qualifications, I map lessons directly to the exam board's assessment objectives and past coursework requirements.
Regular feedback: short recap and listen-back at the start of each session, clear goals set at the end, so progress is made lesson to lesson rather than resetting each time.
Lesson Length
Session length varies depending on the student and the task — typically between 45–60 minutes. I agree the format with each student/parent based on their goals and attention span.
