About Adria
I have over 25 years' experience working in the field of teaching and training. I began my career in January 1995, when I impulsively accepted a job to teach English in Japan. Since then, I have lived and worked in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, London, Central Asia, China, and the Middle East. I have held teaching and training positions with the Department of Defense and Georgetown University. I have done project work with the US Department of State's Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs and the US Agency for International Development.

I believe that students learn best when their affective filter is lowered, or at the very least, reduced. To me, this means understanding anxiety or fear that students may have and doing my best to understand where these feelings are coming from. On the Myers-Briggs scale, I am an ENFP (Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Prospecting), which a big lean on the F for feeling. People have told me that I am “too sensitive” but I disagree. My ability to show empathy and intuit how others are feeling/responding is a gift that I use in my classroom to be a better teacher.
I like to use Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences as a model for teaching. Not all students have the same intelligence. Some students are more logically minded while others are more intuitive. To me, this means creating materials that allow students to learn in a manner that works best with their own style.
