About Avery
Hi, I'm Avery! I'm a Yale student pursuing a double major in Economics and Environmental Science, but my true passion has always been literature. I grew up with my nose in books, from the classics to contemporary fiction, which naturally led me to develop strong writing and analytical skills. Reading and writing remain my favorite hobbies, and I would love to share my passion with curious students. My interest in tutoring started when I helped classmates prepare for tests in high school, and it evolved into a genuine commitment to helping others develop their critical thinking abilities. Having scored in the top percentile on standardized tests, I understand both the content and strategy required to excel. But beyond test scores, I value the moment when students develop their own insights and connections—those "aha" moments are what make tutoring so rewarding. I believe that strong communication skills and analytical thinking are foundational for success in any field. That's why I take a holistic approach to tutoring, focusing not just on immediate academic goals but on developing skills that will serve students throughout their educational journey. Whether we're analyzing literature, crafting college essays, or preparing for standardized tests, I emphasize thoughtful analysis over rote memorization. In my free time, I write for Yale's student publications, which has sharpened my editorial eye and deepened my appreciation for clear, compelling prose. I also volunteer with local literacy programs in New Haven, sharing my love of reading with younger students. These experiences have taught me that education is most effective when it connects to a student's interests and aspirations—a principle I bring to every tutoring session.

As a tutor, I focus on developing critical thinking skills that students can apply across disciplines. I don't just teach what to think—I teach how to think. My approach centers on asking the right questions and building analytical frameworks that help students tackle unfamiliar problems with confidence. Whether we're dissecting a text or preparing for standardized tests, I emphasize understanding the underlying logic rather than memorizing formulas or rules.
A typical session with me is dynamic and conversational. We'll start by identifying key concepts or challenges, then work through examples that push you to reason independently. I believe in the Socratic method—guiding students toward insights through targeted questions rather than simply providing answers. For test prep, we'll analyze the patterns and logic behind questions, developing strategies that work with your unique thinking style. I assign thoughtful homework that reinforces these critical thinking skills rather than busywork.
What makes me different is that I treat each student as an intellectual equal. Having excelled academically at Yale and achieved top ACT scores, I understand both the content knowledge and mental approach needed for success. My editorial experience gives me insight into how arguments are constructed and evaluated—skills I pass on to my students. I'm particularly good at helping students find their authentic voice in writing while maintaining logical rigor.
My tutoring is ideal for high school students aiming for top colleges, test-takers looking to break through score plateaus, and college students wanting to elevate their analytical writing. I work best with motivated learners who want to develop thinking skills that will serve them throughout college and beyond. Whether you're tackling an essay, prepping for the ACT, or working on college applications, I'll help you approach the challenge with clarity, confidence, and intellectual curiosity.RetryClaude can make mistakes.
