About Derek
Hi, I'm Dr. Derek Porter. I earned my doctorate from the College of William & Mary and began my teaching career as a Global Thinking instructor at St. Christopher’s School (Richmond). Over the last decade, I’ve worked closely with students and teachers—as a classroom educator, a faculty research coordinator, and now as an independent school administrator (Dallas). Outside the classroom, I’ve had the honor of: - Serving as a guest lecturer for doctoral students - Leading professional development for school districts, especially around music history and culturally responsive teaching - Presenting at national conferences on document-based questions (DBQs), learning lost during the Pandemic, and much more. Whether you’re looking to boost your grades, prep for interviews, or just feel more confident in class, I’d love to work with you. My passion is helping learners grow—in their thinking, their confidence, and their character. I bring that same energy to every tutoring session.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my emphasis on practical soft skills and a structured, student-centered teaching approach.
✦ Teaching Method
My joy is to help you feel more confident, capable, and in control of your learning. Here's how we make that happen:
1) Start with a Focus – Every session has a clear goal. You’ll know exactly what we’re working on and how it connects to your bigger academic or personal goals.
2) Guided Support – I’ll ask smart questions and give just enough help to keep you thinking and growing.
3) Practice with Purpose – We’ll work together using the kind of language and thinking that helps you crush class discussions, papers, and tests.
4) Take It and Run – You’ll end each session ready to use what you learned on your own—at school, in life, or wherever you’re headed.
✦What Makes This Different
This isn’t just tutoring—it’s training for life. You’ll build the academic skills you need and the soft skills that make a difference: focus, communication, accountability, and confidence. I’ll meet you where you are and we will grow together.
✦Who I Work With
I work with learners from 3rd grade through adulthood, including:
- Students who want to get ahead or get unstuck
- Teens prepping for interviews, essays, or transitions
- College students who want extra support
- Adults sharpening professional or academic skills
Along the way, we’ll build key skills like communication, time management, and self-confidence—because it’s not just about grades, it’s about who you’re becoming.
