About Nicole
I started as a Writing Center tutor at the University of Houston, teaching students in all academic fields and from all over the world. I also taught at Pennsylvania State University while I was earning my M.A., and at Santa Barbara City College for two years.

My first goal is to help a student think of an essay as something that's supposed to work, like an engine, so that they can make writing decisions based on goals, not just checklists. I believe everyone learns better when you can tell them WHY they have to do things a certain way: why you need examples, why you have to provide citations, why you should put that paragraph last instead of first. Everyone comes with their own strengths, weaknesses, and hangups from old English teachers, so I tailor my approach to each individual student. Many students think that grammar is their biggest problem; I'm here to tell you, that's almost never the case. Much more often it's not knowing what you want to say, or not knowing what that part of the essay is supposed to accomplish. I use a process of guided practice and constructive feedback, to help each student build skills, and build confidence. With guidance and practice, anyone can become a more competent and capable writer.
