About Sara
Sara McGuirk currently teaches at the University of Iowa Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing. She holds an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and a BA in English and Film Studies from the University of Notre Dame. She was the winner of the 2017 Phyllis Smart-Young Prize in poetry, a finalist for the 2017 Madeleine P. Plonsker Emerging Writers Prize in poetry and was short-listed for the 2021 Harbor Editions Laureate Prize. Her work can be found in Gulf Coast, Denver Quarterly, the Iowa Review, the Bennington Review, and elsewhere. McGuirk also works at a bike shop and performs with the I.C. Kings drag troupe.

Working with writers reminds me, every day, of why I return to this craft and this occupation.
For me, storytelling and crafting stories/poems/films/essays is a "preoccupation" more than anything else. To engage with you is a genuine joy.
That being said, this craft is as complex as building a world, a reality, an argument, a life. We'll work on everything from plot structure, to delivery of information, characterization, connotation/messaging, alignment, intentional/motivated delivery, pacing...essentials of show vs tell, process, revision, etc.
