  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I still remember the first time hearing Herbie Hancock "Rockitt" featuring NYC DJ DXT on DJ scratching duty. Not only was the music a bold future vision of drum beats and synth texture but the percussive DJ work was an incredible addition. Seeing the music video for this song only solidified my fascination. Through the years the role of the DJ in a club/party or backbone of classic hiphop was a huge inspiration.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I have a deep passion for classic (golden era) hip-hop including artists like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul up to 1999's Mos Def album Black on Both Sides. A mix of that music is often on background. more recently works by Detroit techno electro geniuses Drexcyia, ambient and elexctronic wizardry from ApheX Twin as well as minimalist piano works by composer Philip Glass (Metamorphosis suites) are solid favorites
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most difficult challenge for a DJ is playing an unfamiliar room when the preferences do not neatly align with your personal tastes. Many will never find themselves in this situation but a lot of djs who play a wide range of venues will eventually encounter this.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

In my world i would say DJing is easy to learn but difficult to become a master of. There is always another level we can push ourselves to in the aim of perfecting the inperfectable! Beyond djing i would say building a compelling live electronic performance is exceedingly difficult but an incredible rush when done well!
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Find interesting "stories" to tell selecting music from the overwhelming sea of what's available, explore/practice playing this music within a given narrative, find like-minded people in my area to collaborate and build with (create my own opportunities).
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

As a young DJ moving back home to Chicago after college i was a tiny fish in a huge pond. Securing any bookings was very difficult for me in spite of my personal feeling about my capabilities at the time. Faced with this challenge I resolved to build my own promotions with friends and over time was able to build success organically through our own good shows.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I have personal and professional experience djing a huge amount of varied electronic dance music as well ambient and rhythm oriented music like hiphop, funk, soul and latin jazz. To that end I am comfortable working with DJs interested in an even wider range of music. I am patient with new students, really working hard to meet them where they are. I have lots of personal experience navigating my own dj practice in a highly competitive environment including all aspects of DJ life including event production and promotion as well as electronic music production and distribution.
