Questions: What era are we looking at? Who are our major players and how is everything connected from the people on the ground to the policies in Congress? There are always many spiderwebs to connect. Example: Where and how did Abraham Lincoln write his November 19th, 1863 Gettysburg Address, only 290 words in total, but immediately published and recited in classrooms across the country, and across the World? a. Was it an original piece of work? b. Did it borrow from other sources at the time? c. Was it hurriedly scribbled on the back of an envelope during the train ride from Washington, DC to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania? Reading References: 1. The Gettysburg Address, November 19th, 1863 2. Lincoln's Response to a Serenade July 7th, 1863 3. Pericles' Funeral Oration 431 B.C. 4. YouTube: "Why Do We Remember The Gettysburg Address" with Dr. Allen C. Guelzo: 1 hr 7 minutes. How might have Lincoln constructed his Address using these references he had? Can you reconstruct Lincoln's process of address writing?
