About Linda

I have 46 combined years of experience as an elementary school and preschool classroom teacher. I have also worked as an elementary school substitute teacher. I am Pennsylvania certified for grades preschool through 5, with a Masters Degree in reading instruction.

I have worked one to one with students, with small groups, with large classes, and as a tutor. As a substitute teacher, I have especially loved working with special needs students.

Creating a warm, positive, encouraging and appropriately structured environment with fair boundaries is extremely important to me in helping every child feel confident in his or her ability to learn and grow. My greatest accomplishment every year has been the academic and personal growth that I've seen in my students, as well as their enthusiasm for learning!

Ongoing communication with parents and a daily review with each student has always been important
as part of my teaching practice. We all have the same goal-to help each student learn and flourish!

Listening to and learning about each student is an essential first step in helping. With which skills is this girl or boy struggling? What are his or her strengths/weaknesses, attitude, confidence level, experiences? (Information from a parent, perhaps a summary from the classroom teacher(s) and diagnostic results ,if available, are also helpful when authorized, and would not necessarily be discussed with the student. Informally exploring the student's skills with a few sample questions or problems can also be beneficial.

Establishing a connection with each child is another essential part of our learning together. It is so important that a student feel that our working together is based on mutual respect and appreciation. I am always positive, encouraging, and patient. An appropriate sense of humor is a great tension breaker also! If one approach to helping a student isn't working, then we try another way. Visual aids, graphic organizers, short illustrative videos, manipulatives (Since we're working remotely, we would have the same manipulatives.), drawings, movement experiences ("Touch your head, shoulders, then knees as we say the three sounds in this word," "Let's act out the biomes that we've learned," and workbooks would all be part of our toolbox.

Whenever possible, I insert a child's real life experiences into our work. For example, if Michael and I are doing a math word problem about comparisons (and Michael is a football fan), our problem could be about the amount of money that Mom spent for football watching snacks and the amount of money that Dad spent for football watching snacks. Who spent more and how much more?

I have always been enthusiastic about learning, and I convey that enthusiasm to my students! In a positive, stimulating, effective, and accepting environment, with humor in the mix, students succeed.
