About Soumendu
I did my phd in experimental nuclear physics. I am also familiar with math, Physics and python language for beginners. I also have hands on experience with different electronics system and writing the programming codes for analysis. I am interested to teach the young kids.

My philosophy of teaching centers around a belief that teaching is a symbiotic process in which I can learn more than what I can impart to my audience. I wish to adopt a participative model in my teaching methodology wherein each member would have an opportunity to contribute and assist in the understanding of the subject. I intend to provide a space for individual perspectives to my students. For me, teaching is an important part of an academic career. As a physicist I am motivated not only by the finding some interesting results but also by explaining them to the students or in front of a general audience. I receive great intellectual pleasure from explaining concepts of physics and providing some practical examples and seeing students understand them. I feel that it is an essential tool to keep students involved in the subject and convey to them not just the information but also provide the experimental explanation of the underlying physics concept.
I spent around one year at the Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi, India as a research associate in the gamma-ray spectroscopy group. There, I had the opportunity to help the doctoral students with their analyses, develop the software codes and guide students on how to test and handle and setup the Clover (HPGe) detectors for the experiments. My curiosity about teaching also got me not just helping the doctoral students for their analysis but also to clarify the nuclear physics concepts and their applications and their impact in simulations. I am looking forward to involving students in more hands-on activities for example instrumentation, computer programing and simulations. In that way students will be more involved and finally learning will become their passion.
I spent around 3.5 years as a postdoctoral fellow at TRIUMF in the TIGRESS and IRIS groups. As a postdoc fellow in these two groups, I handled different types of detector systems for example, segmented, non-segmented clover detectors, scintillator detectors for example CsI, BGO, and LaBr3 detectors and Si detectors and gas detectors as well. I acquired an extensive knowledge about how to setup the electronics of these detectors and how to maintain these detectors and also how to handle the associated vacuum systems. As a postdoc fellow I was involved with the students to help them in their analysis and their laboratory work. I chose to participate in teaching or explaining the students because I was always curious about what it is like or whether I am enjoying it or not. I was also always wondering if students could understand what I was talking about. Overall it was a great experience for me to teach the younger students.
In summary, I acquired an extensive knowledge in explaining the physics concepts to students at different levels during my research associate and postdoctoral fellow periods. My, teaching philosophy is that it is essential to keep the students involved and passionate about the subject. One key tool for better teaching is getting feedback from the students or senior colleagues and adjust to them accordingly. I have found that it is beneficial to actively encourage students to keep asking questions during the lectures as well as asking them questions myself. One useful strategy that I would like to try, especially in introductory classes, is the interactive teaching method.
I am also interested in developing academic programs and activities for students and resolve the academic issues for students. This would involve regular monitoring of the activities and progress of individual students as well as coordinating with other teachers and discussing with them regarding how to progress further.
