Teaching Method and Techniques
Personalized Approach: I believe every voice is unique, so I tailor each lesson based on the student's vocal abilities, goals, and musical preferences. Whether the student is a beginner or an advanced vocalist, I assess their vocal strengths and areas for improvement and design the lesson accordingly.
Building a Strong Foundation: I emphasize the importance of breath control, posture, and vocal technique as foundational elements of singing. This includes exercises that focus on breath support, vocal resonance, and articulation to help the student develop a stable and healthy voice.
Repertoire Selection: I guide students in selecting songs that align with their vocal range and interests, ensuring they enjoy the material they are working on while challenging themselves appropriately. I often incorporate songs from different genres, so students develop versatility. (or if you have your own music, that's fine too )
Healthy Vocal Habits: I place a strong emphasis on vocal health by teaching proper vocal warm-ups, cool-downs, and techniques for avoiding strain. This includes explaining the anatomy of the voice and how to prevent vocal damage.
Music Theory Integration: Depending on the student's interests, I incorporate basic music theory and ear training into lessons. This helps with pitch accuracy, sight-reading, and understanding how to interpret musical notation.
Positive Reinforcement and Encouragement: I always ensure that students feel encouraged and confident, acknowledging their progress and providing constructive feedback. This helps build their self-esteem and motivation to keep improving.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Warm-Up (10–15 minutes): We begin with vocal warm-ups that focus on breath control, pitch accuracy, and loosening up the vocal cords. These exercises are designed to relax the voice and prepare it for singing.
Technique Focus (10–15 minutes): A portion of the lesson is dedicated to specific vocal techniques like improving breath support, resonance, range extension, or articulation. This part often involves targeted exercises that address the student's individual challenges.
Repertoire Work (15–20 minutes): We move into working on the student’s chosen song or repertoire. This can involve breaking down the song, focusing on specific sections that need attention, and refining phrasing, dynamics, and emotion.
Cool-Down (5–10 minutes): At the end of each lesson, we do a vocal cool-down to relax the vocal cords and prevent strain.
Homework and Practice Tips: Before the end of the lesson, I provide personalized exercises and practice tips for the student to work on until our next session.
