About Owen

I'm a professional singer and vocal coach based in East London. I'm Tenor 2 in the five-time Grammy-winning vocal group The Swingles, and alongside that I work as a solo singer, in church music, and in session work for film, TV and radio across the UK and internationally.

I take on a small number of general singing students — primarily online via Zoom, with limited in-person availability at my home studio in Stratford (Elizabeth Line).

Above all, I'm focused on healthy, sustainable vocal technique that supports your voice for the long term.

Credentials: MA Vocal Studies (University of York), Vocal Health First Aider, qualified in Laryngeal Manual Therapy (Voice Care Centre), Accredited Member of Vocal Health Education, member of the British Voice Association and the Association of Teachers of Singing.

Find out more about Owen

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I have been passionate about music from the age of 8 when I took up my first instrument, the flute, at primary school. From there, I joined the school choir and fell in love with singing, and the rest is history!. Aside from the voice, my favourite instrument would have to be the trombone.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Recently, I've been obsessed with Michael Mayo's amazing interpretations of old jazz standards - his version of Four by Miles Davis has been on loop for months now!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

As a massive vocal nerd myself, I love getting the chance to delve into complex and detailed work with my students. One of the most challenging things to achieve is mastering effective cross-genre singing - this requires incredible vocal control and an in-depth knowledge of your own voice.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Although every instrument has its challenges, I do genuinely believe the voice is the most versatile and complex instrument you can master. You have the ability to make an almost endless amount of different sounds with your instrument, and as such the learning process is often constant and life-long.
  • What are your keys to success?

The fundamental keys to success with vocal training are intention and regular work. You don't have to be singing for hours every day to improve your voice, but committing to regular practice and self-reflection is paramount to getting the most out of your singing journey.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Jeremy Jordan, Yebba and Anders Edenroth (The Real Group) - they are all phenomenal vocalists in completely different genres, and I think they'd all be great fun after a drink or two!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

During my time at university, I made a drastic switch from opera singing to musical theatre/contemporary - I had never done anything like it before, but it proved to be the best decision I ever made, leading to a freelance career in musical theatre and ultimately my current job in The Swingles.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I absolutely tailor every lesson to the individual, and am very responsive and accommodating to the unique needs of each student. There is no such thing as a wrong note in my sessions - only learning experiences! I am genuinely passionate about the success and development of my clients, and am always their biggest supporter throughout their vocal journey.
