About Melanie
Melanie Ooi is a violinist, violist, and cellist who has graduated with a bachelor’s degree in string performance (violin) from California State University Northridge (CSUN). Last year (2024), she toured internationally with the Asian Youth Orchestra, performing in China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. She also performed in various local orchestras, such as the NSO (National Symphony Orchestra), SSO (Selangor Symphony Orchestra), and the Tutan Festival Orchestra, among others. Melanie formerly held the position of first violin in the CSUN Honors Strings Quartet (2022-23) and has also performed in various piano trios, quartets, and quintets. She was also invited to perform at the (concealed information) 2022. Throughout her time at CSUN, she was the recipient of the Bayramian Foundation Scholarship award (2021-2022), the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Junior (2021-2022), and the award for Outstanding Student in Strings (2021-2022), among others. She was also the winner of the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota 2023 Music Scholarship Competition and the CSUN’s 2023 concerto competition, which she performed with the CSUN Symphony Orchestra.
Melanie started learning the violin at the age of 5, and later, the cello and viola at the ages of 11 and 18 respectively. She was awarded several prizes playing the cello in a few competitions and has been participating in a few local cello projects over the past few years. She has also performed in the viola section with the CSUN Symphony Orchestra on several occasions.
