About Julia
From Boston, Massachusetts, I began my studies at Tufts University studying Biopsychology, before transitioning to professional music studies with my master's in viola performance at The Juilliard School. With almost 10 years of teaching experience, I have students in both the United States and in France. I love being able to share my experience with my students of all levels and to teach music as an art that contributes to a holistic and healthy life. I studied and performed in Berlin until winning the audition to join the Opera Orchestre Nationale Montpellier, France, in 2024, where I now live. I perform full time with the orchestra and teach virtually and in person. Please don't hesitate to reach out or to request a trial lesson!

I am an American violist and violinist living in France and teaching music virtually and in person. I am a second soloist in the Opera Orchestra Nationale Montpellier and have been teaching for almost 10 years. I studied viola at the Juilliard School and the Universität der Künste in Berlin with the former principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic. I have played with the Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, Kammerakademie Potsdam, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Verbier Festival Orchestra among others. I teach all levels from beginner to pre-professional, and all ages, both children and adults. My teaching philosophy is to tailor my lessons to the goals of my students. Whether you or your child is looking to achieve a professional level, or want to play as a hobby, we can work together to plan lessons around your goals. I have experience teaching the Suzuki method for beginners, but can also offer help with audition prep, ear training, and practice techniques for more advanced players. Whatever your goals may be, please do not hesitate to reach out and we can come up with a plan together!

Perfect! My daughter isn't a beginner. Julia is able to provide much help and advice to further refine her piece as she prepares for an upcoming adjudication. She is very patient and can work with beginners to intermediate to advanced players

I have studied viola with Julia for several years, starting as an adult beginner. I chose Julia because she was a serious Juilliard graduate and then continued, absolutely certain I had found a dream professional violist who was interested in how people “could” learn based on their learning style and what their goals were for music! She sees, listens, communicates and delights in the learning experience.
Her skill level is professional. Julia will start with you wherever you are at and take you where you feel you want to go.
She is intuitive and skilled and allowed me to experiment with how to approach the viola; becoming comfortable with the instrument, getting a good sound, learning to hang in there and to see that the doing IS the progress.I’ve known and worked with Julia for over 5 years. She is not only a highly accomplished violist and beautiful musician, but also a wonderful instructor. Julia is approachable, intuitive, and incredibly encouraging. Her passion and love of teaching is inspiring!
Julia is a fantastic teacher. She is enthusiastic, incredibly patient, and highly knowledgeable - her musical talent and experience are clear from the first lesson, and her work is truly inspiring. I couldn't recommend Julia enough!
I am proud to say that, over our years of work together, Julia has become not only a dear mentor but a cherished friend. She is a stellar teacher, meticulous and deeply intelligent, approaching every lesson with a sense of humor and a seemingly-infinite wellspring of patience. I can wholeheartedly say that I know of no better violin teacher than Julia.
I have been taking violin lessons with Julia for over three years now. I had restarted playing violin as an adult and she had worked with me since day. One of starting over. She is a wonderful teacher and mentor during and outside of lessons. She had gone above and beyond to answer questions outside of our lesson hours and put in extra time for me that she didn’t have to do. With her help I just won my first position with an orchestra. She’s a wonderful person, very easy to talk to and wonderful at explaining concepts.
It is my pleasure to recommend Julia as a teacher. She is kind, patient and knowledgeable. She has lived in lots of places so speaks several languages. She is an American who now lives in France and is fluent. I think that because she has gone through being a foreign language learner, she has experienced the same problems that I have had and has given me great tips that have really helped my French improve. She is also a professional musician who teaches music, so she has LOTS of experience as a teacher.
