About Lillian
I am a guitar tutor with 11 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Composition with Guitar as my principal instrument. I have taught over 500 students across classical, jazz, folk, rock, metal, bossa nova, blues, and flamenco guitar, which has given me an unusually broad stylistic range and the ability to meet students wherever their musical passion already lives. My composition training means I teach guitar not just as an instrument but as a complete musical system — my students understand music structurally, not just mechanically. I perform regularly as a solo fingerstyle guitarist and have released two recorded albums of original compositions, which means my creative practice is active and feeds directly into my teaching. I have mentored several of my former students who have gone on to study music professionally, and I take considerable pride in that continuity.

My guitar teaching has evolved over eleven years into a highly personalised system that I rebuild from scratch with each new student based on a detailed intake conversation covering their listening habits, previous music education, physical characteristics, and goals. I believe the right repertoire is the most powerful teaching tool available, so I spend time finding music each student genuinely loves and building technical and theoretical work around it rather than imposing a standardised curriculum. My approach to technique is conservative — I prioritise a relaxed, injury-free physical relationship with the instrument above all other technical considerations, and I will slow down a student who is pushing their tempo at the expense of tension. Fretboard theory is taught comprehensively from the beginning: scales, modes, the CAGED system, and interval recognition on the neck, because a guitarist who understands the fretboard as a map rather than a collection of memorised patterns develops much faster. For students interested in composition or arrangement I teach basic orchestration principles applied to the guitar — how to voice chords to allow melody to sing, how to create textural contrast, how to build and release tension in a piece. I use play-along recordings across all genres — not just backing tracks but actual recordings with space for the guitar part removed — so students develop the ear for sitting in a mix from early in their studies. Assessment in my studio takes the form of recorded performances reviewed together rather than formal examinations unless the student specifically seeks a grade. Students who are struggling get a complete reset of their practice routine because in my experience bad practice habits cause 90% of plateaus. Electric and acoustic students both receive instruction in amplified and unamplified contexts because each requires distinct technique. My teaching goal is a guitarist who keeps playing for the rest of their life.
