About Matthew
I have been teaching English for 25 years. I have taught teens, graduate students, adults, and foreign professionals. I have BAs in Philosophy and Communications and an MA in teaching. My education and experience have taught me how to connect with all kinds of students to reduce their inhibitions, build their confidence and get the results they want. My experience as a university professor and academic program administrator also gives me valuable insight into the expectations and norms prevalent in higher education. My teaching method starts with listening. I need to hear from you what your needs are, what your strengths are, what your opportunities for growth are, and what your goals are. As I listen to you, I get to know you, and as we get to know each other, you will be primed for learning. Based on your needs, I will create short- and long-term plans for our meetings. We'll work together as partners in our sessions to make progress and then I'll send you off to take an additional step towards your goal. On our next meeting, we'll assess your progress and use your work to advance to the next step. What sets me apart as a tutor is that I will treat you as a partner, not as a student. You will learn how to learn better so that in the end you won't need me. If you are a high school student, I can help you with your writing assignments and coach you through college applications. If you are an undergraduate, I can consult with you in your composition courses and make you a more independent learner. If you are a graduate student, I can help you refine research writing for publication. I look forward to working with you!
