About Jessica

I’ve been playing the cello for 32 years, but I’ve truly been a cellist for 20 of those. Going through a university music program and graduating with a degree in cello performance will make that distinction. But I don't think that the length of time you've played or even the degree that you've achieved will automatically make you a good teacher. That requires a genuine interest in your students, a patient ear, and a love of learning. My desire to be a better cellist and teacher did not stop as soon as I graduated. I continued taking lessons, taking teacher training courses, and observing master classes to make sure I can offer the best support to my students as possible.

My favorite thing about teaching is my students!  Everyone has different goals & reasons for choosing the cello that I love to learn about and incorporate into lessons.  Some are the typical school-age students that don't necessarily have a specific goal, so we work through the Suzuki books and additional supportive technique books.  As they gain experience, I will continue to check-in and see if there are any pieces or genres that have started to interest them.  Sometimes I will even adapt a harder piece to their level.  Others are adults (some well into their 80's and 90's) that know what they want to accomplish or what type of music they want to play.  I usually like to focus more on the repertoire and sprinkle in exercises when needed.  In either situation, I keep my antennae up to notice any sense of frustration that will require a step back or a step in another direction.

I offer recitals twice a year.  Online they are done via Zoom and in person is at a local church in Pasadena, CA.  They are not mandatory, but suggested as preparing for a recital is a great way to really push yourself to polish a piece.

The books I use and the way I teach depends entirely on the student.  I do, however, teach note-reading from the beginning, so if someone comes to me not knowing how to read music or having never played an instrument, I like to start with the Essential Elements series.  As the student makes their way through that, I will start adding in some pieces from the Suzuki books.  I also use supplemental technique books like the Rick Mooney Position Pieces and Double Stops series.  As needed, I will add in exercises or etudes from other method books like Feuillard's Etudes for the Young Cellist or Schroeder's etudes books.
