About Jay
I am Palestinian and English, non-binary (using they/ them pronouns), and have a background in school climate activism, starting in late high-school in Oxfordshire, where I was born and raised.
This later experience came after years of engagement with French, Latin, Italian, and English itself, in the forms of poetry, literature, music, oratory, classics, linguistics, and a wide range of focuses on how language and everyday life connect and interact. It helped me see new sides of our education systems, and the expectations placed on students — the kind of help we receive, and, sometimes, the help we do not get.
As an anthropology student, someone with diagnosed ADHD, and strongly invested in social justice, I have had years of experience negotiating education and personal life while developing an understanding of how learning and other activities are impacted by such issues. I deeply encourage students to engage with dialogue around such issues, if they feel comfortable, as they are key to understanding how we work, learn, and play.
I now study Arabic, with a wide range of focuses that help me better understand my native English, and the different ways we can break down and build up our skills in speaking, reading, writing, and thinking; I am eager to share this experience, and learn from others', too!

With experience meeting the high demands placed on students in the UK schooling and university systems, I aim to work to work with students alongside their curricula, or in ways that complement their strengths and interests, taking chances to explore foundational or more specialised skills and topics that might have been skated over in class.
Typical lessons are an hour long, with room to change if necessary.
My lessons are for high-school age and up. We can work on exams, assignments, or exploration of literature and language out of pure interest!
I work with the understanding that approaching students with curiosity, and keeping an open conversation around their interests and needs is essential.
Having completed secondary school, I am in the final year of an MSc at the University of Edinburgh in Arabic and Social Anthropology. I have experience teaching English as a foreign language to young Arabic learners, and have engaged in every single one of my own classes until now with a desire to learn from my own teachers — and it is with them in mind that I offer my experience. I have a teaching qualification in karate and self-protection, for all ages, and use this different style of teaching to approach language learning in new ways.
