About Kabelo

I am a 21 year old student at UCT. In high school I did Core Math, Physical Science (Physics and chemistry), Natural Science, History and French as well as the core subjects - English, IsiZulu and Life Orientation. I was able to achieve 6 distinctions out of the 8 subjects I was doing.

I’ve always enjoyed learning but now that I’m older I truly see the value of a good foundation in school. A solid academic start carries you through your school career and makes the challenging parts easier to manage. I want my pupils to feel confident in their basics so that they tackle the hard questions with excitement and wonder, instead of panic and fear.

I’ve learnt that classroom learning is not suited for all learners. One-on-one lessons feel more relaxed and I find that they prepare students better for tests. This is because you practice past papers and make mental notes on your own, in a comfortable setting, and can use the same mentality during tests or exams.

Tutoring lessons really gave me the push I needed in school and I want to be that person for other learners. The encouragement and different perspectives that tutors offer is rare to find in schools. This is because tutors like myself are in tune with the curriculum but are also relatable in terms of experience.

English specifically is something that is unavoidable and universal. Good understanding and communication in English can help take you far and achieve in all your other subjects.

I want for students to aim for improvement and then excellence because it can all be achieved with patience, commitment, practice and more practice!

I was fortunate enough to attend a very good high school and have amazing tutors who helped me achieve 6 distinctions (English being one of them) in my matric year and inspired me to help others.

I find it important to understand the learner’s personality and what teaching methods they respond well to. Building a professional yet open relationship where questions are welcome is key. This makes lessons comfortable and allows for flexible learning which isn’t usually the case in classrooms.

Firstly, I like to cover basics and the content that needs revision and I give the learner the space to answer questions on their own. “Basics” include things like grammar, spelling and sentence construction. This allows me to gauge their skills and where I would need to come in.

The IEB has a preferred approach to answering comprehension and literature-based questions and I use this as the foundation of my lessons. The approach also stands out in all other curricula as well.

A subjects needs practice and imagination. To this end, I do not give learners the answers to questions. Rather, I probe them and remind them of their skills and knowledge so that they feel confident to write their own speeches, essays and comprehension answers.

Depending on necessity, I create slides or infographics highlighting key concepts that can be shared with learners for at-home revision. I think it’s important to keep lessons concise yet effective so learners don’t feel exhausted or demotivated before attempting their homework on their own. My students and I have open conversation about progress and set achievable academic goals together.
