About Angus
As a teacher I am committed to supporting young people to develop the broad-based knowledge, exceptional critical thinking skills, cultural awareness and imagination necessary to flourish as active and judicious global citizens. Through strong, productive relationships with students I seek to ignite in them curiosity about the world and excitement about the way literature and language work. I also aim to cultivate the self-efficacy and personal learning habits that underpin the establishment of ambitious academic goals and success as independent and lifelong learners.

My tutoring is tailored to the individual student. I begin with a thorough diagnostic of their reading, writing and subject knowledge, identifying existing strengths and the areas in which targeted teaching will produce the greatest progress.
Sessions are active and collaborative, combining close reading, discussion and purposeful writing. I work with students to co-construct rich, sophisticated interpretations while developing their confidence to generate ideas, question assumptions and defend their viewpoints independently.
Students engage in carefully designed activities targeting the key skills required for success at GCSE and A level:
Analysing how writers construct meaning
Developing sustained, coherent arguments
Selecting and exploring textual evidence precisely
Using critical perspectives and historical context to deepen interpretations
Evaluating and refining their own thinking and writing
My teaching is cumulative, with each session building deliberately on previous learning. Over time, students become bold, informed and independent readers who can construct persuasive essays and articulate a distinctive critical voice clearly and confidently under exam conditions.

Angus is a creative and dedicated teacher as well as a strategic leader of Sixth Form English. He is able to help his students capture the perfect blend between micro and macro analysis of literary texts. He has helped me grow as a teacher and personal tutor, as well as a person.
Angus was an excellent tutor who equipped me with the skills to do well in my IB English A exams.
In every session, he displayed an extremely thorough knowledge of exactly how to tackle different IB essay questions and what was expected in the exam. What I appreciated most was how he identified my weaknesses and helped me strengthen them session by session, which allowed me to achieve a high 7 in both of my Paper 1 essays, the paper I was most anxious about.
Everything I learned with Angus I still carry with me today in my law degree at LSE, and I truly credit him with helping me get there.
Beyond academics, he gave me a genuine love and passion for literature. I highly recommend Angus’ tutoring.View more recommendations
