About Luke
I am a graduate from the University of Bristol with a Master's degree (MSci) in chemistry (1st classification), and I am an experienced tutor confident in teaching a variety of ages up to my current qualification level in chemistry. I have taught multiple students up to GCSE and A-level, and have helped students progress from grade 5 to grade 9 at GCSE level, and C to A* at A-Level. I have been accepted to study for a PGCE at the University of Bristol. I am available for weekly sessions (or more than that if required), online or in person. I am most familiar with AQA exam boards, but as most of the knowledge and exam technique is transferable, I have managed fine teaching some Edexcel students. Each session will be planned according to the needs of the student, although they will all follow a basic pre-determined plan I will set at the beginning. If you have any questions at any point, please don't hesitate to let me know!

I cover subjects including electrochemistry, thermodynamics, chemical equations, mole calculations, organic chemistry, electronic configuration, transition metals, and many others. I am flexible around learning styles, and will aim to get to know all of my students well to ensure they are learning as much as they can. While I believe a student's achievements are theirs to be celebrated, I also understand the importance in access to quality teaching from a tutor who understands where students are often confused, and that simply repeating explanations is not sufficient. With that in mind, I approach lessons with an empathetic style, aiming to get to the heart of any misunderstandings, and highlighting where common confusions arise. One thing I've found students respond well to is clearly defining how exam boards expect knowledge to be applied (getting behind the smokescreen of marking criteria), while simultaneously encouraging a deep understanding of the topic. I am able to follow set lesson plans if required, although I have found students find it most helpful to come to me with subjects they have had difficulty with in class. I allow for both, and do not feel the need to stick to a rigid plan if it appears the student needs more focus in a particular area. While I am more experienced with GCSE and A-Level students, I am able to offer tutoring at degree level. It should be noted that university curricula are not as uniform as in schools, so I will likely only be able to offer help up until final year, when modules become more specialist. I can cover molecular orbital theory, entry-level quantum mechanics (without a heavy maths focus), reaction mechanisms (organic chemistry), D-block and Crystal Field Theory.

Luke tutored me last year for my GCSEs mainly with 'bonding theory' in chemistry as I struggled quite a bit in that area. Also one of the bits he was most helpful with was the quantitative chemistry which basically involves lots of maths and calculations. I definitely recommend him as he explained it really carefully and by the end I managed to understand most of the calculations I needed to make!
I have known Luke for several years being in the year above when I was studying for my GCSE qualifications. As I knew he was studying chemistry and did well at GCSE, I asked if he would help me learn some of the topics I found more confusing such as electrolysis and electron configuration for chemistry and hormone functions for biology. He helped greatly then and also throughout AS level. I definitely recommend him for tutoring and wish him luck!
