About Joey
Is the talk built, but still hard to follow—or hard to stand up and deliver?
A presentation is a short story you tell on a clock. I’m Joey, an American linguist and a full professor at a major university. I hold a PhD in linguistics. For decades I have taught students how to build an argument, how to order a talk, and how to say it in English a room can actually follow.
I work with you on your slides and your script. I do not write the speech for you. We use the same three tools I use in writing: Joseph Williams’ Style: Clarity and Grace (characters as subjects, actions as verbs), Helen Sword’s The Writer’s Diet (cut zombie nouns and wasted words), and story logic (a problem, a struggle with evidence, a resolution the audience can see). That is what makes a talk readable on the slide and interesting in the room.
We meet on Google Meet. You present. I coach.

Plan
Send the assignment or talk goal, the slides, and any script.
On Google Meet we fix the spine: one claim, slide order, what to cut.
You run a section. I stop you where the audience would get lost. You leave with three tasks.
A typical 50 minutes
What this talk must do → the story of the argument → two or three slides and a dry run → your next steps. I coach. I don’t write it for you.
Who it’s for
Undergrads with a graded presentation. Graduate students with a seminar, conference paper, or defense. International students at US universities. Not a Toastmasters pep talk with no content. Not “please write my speech.”
