About Magnus
I am currently in my second year of study at the University of Edinburgh, which is considered to be in the top 20 universities in the world, and 16th in the world for history. I have excelled academically to reach my goal of studying here, earning five 9s at GCSE and four A*s at A-Level.
I am an empathetic and passionate individual, and I find teaching and helping others to be incredibly fulfilling. Through my distinctive pedagogy, I have not only helped myself along with way, but have experience helping my peers and family. I am excited to have the opportunity to help others to further their academic capability.

I have a demonstrative and constructionist approach towards teaching history which focuses on improving the student's understanding of the topic and evaluation/essay skills. My lessons, which are typically an hour long and orientated around specific themes and topics, have a four-part structure. They start with questioning, to assess the student's preexisting understanding and lay out the goals of the lesson. The second stage is demonstrative, where I use microhistory - focussing on one individual, event or incident core to the topic - to build intrigue and demonstrate wider context. This stage avoids lecturing, and is instead founded on storytelling and collaboration to ensure the student gains a rich and memorable knowledge of the topic. The third stage is collaborative, and involves guiding the student towards a thesis to answer an essay question taken from a past paper. I then help the student devise an essay plan to help demonstrate this thesis, and help them write a sample paragraph from that essay plan in order to work on their writing skills. Finally, the lesson ends in a debrief, in which we go through the questions asked at the beginning of the lesson, to make sure there are no gaps in the student's understanding.
I achieved Grade 9 in GCSE History, and an A* in A-Level history. I know what it takes to excel in history, and my methodology ensures any student will reach the height of their potential under my tutelage. Though I have limited experience in paid tutoring, I have two younger sisters I have helped in their studies for many years, one of whom recently achieved an A* in A-Level history this year. It was through this experience that I refined my teaching methodology. My lessons are primarily aimed at GCSE and A-Level students, though I am also qualified to teach at KS3 level, or tutor adults looking to improve their appreciation of history.
