About Naimah
After almost three years of working as a camp/afterschool counselor with BREC Art Camp and one year working as a tutor with the Ignite Fellowship program, I have acquired a sense of responsibility and confidence concerning my ability to problem-solve, work with a team, and communicate effectively. As a camp counselor, I had to navigate through a rotation of new hires every summer, adapting to varying personalities and giving instruction as I became more experienced within my position. When the camp director (who is the teacher of the campers and the manager of the camp staff members) was out sick for several weeks during my second summer working with BREC Art Camp, I was the most experienced person left on the staff. I stepped up and took over the camp director responsibilities, which included writing incident/accident reports, communicating with parents, delegating tasks to camp staff members, teaching art lessons, and running the daily camp activities. That summer pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of, bringing out my leadership abilities and demonstrating my adaptability. I have utilized these skills while tutoring for Ignite, and I’m confident that I will continue to develop these abilities with future students.

Over the course of my adolescent and young adult years, I have spent a lot of time working and volunteering in child-oriented programs. These experiences have cultivated a recognition of the importance of the youth and what they have to contribute to the world. Over time, I have learned to implement scientific methods proven to help students succeed academically. I am specifically specialized in teaching elementary/middle school math and literacy. During literacy lessons for younger audiences, I emphasize phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension. Typically before I begin teaching during a session, I would spend five minutes introducing an idea, playing an ice breaker game, and checking in emotionally with my student. During the lesson, I use a digital whiteboard and slideshow to introduce math/literacy concepts that are vital for the lesson. My passion for helping kids has influenced the trajectory of my life. I strive to advocate and fight for the well-being of the largest and most vulnerable human population on earth: children. With my passion for the youth and the community as a whole, I would provide adequate support in the school system and aid in furthering the missions of those dedicated to students.
