About Penelope

I started learning piano relatively late at the age of 11, but I had the extreme luck of learning with the most inspiring teachers I could have ever hoped for. It made me realise the importance of fostering a healthy relationship with each student so they can feel safe to talk to me about areas they are struggling with. Learning at an age at which I was self-aware made me see the passion of the style of teaching of my teachers and I strive to replicate the care and patience of those individuals whom I owe my musical journey to. My goal is to inspire children and believe in their ability, because without the motivation of my teachers, I wouldn't be where I am today. I have been a student at Trinity Laban for three years, It is one of the best Conservatoires in Europe. I started by doing a foundation year, where I received a distinction. I have 1 to 1 lessons with Alexander Ardakov, a concert pianist who has recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and performed for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Learning with him has given me a solid work ethic and meticulousness I replicate in my teaching practice. I am incredibly passionate about classical music and the artistry it entails, but I believe in giving my students more contemporary pieces alongside that they might be more in tune with, such as boogies, Disney pieces and easy rock pieces just to make the lesson more invigorating. One of our classes each year is Pedagogy taught by the sensational Penelope Roskell. It focuses on teaching children in the most appropriate and exciting way. Teaching is something I take very seriously and I take great responsibility in giving everything I can to every student.

I have an inherent passion for teaching and it is vital for me to inspire children to play and learn to express their creativity in a safe environment where they can feel confident to experiment with my full support. My teaching style is supportive and I strive to motivate my students by instilling a sense of respect for themselves as artists and the music. It is important to me to teach the fundamentals of music theory to enable students to become the best performer they can be, and be aware of the structure of the pieces they are learning without feeling intimidated or nervous. No matter the level, we will always talk about how to bring the music to life and inject our feelings and experiences into any piece, no matter how easy. - During the hour, we will spend the beginning warming up the hands and body - We will do some fundamental music theory to enable the student to tackle the piece with confidence - Then we'll start working on the piece or pieces depending on the level of the student - We will spend some time getting used to the idea of sight reading - At the end we will talk about practice tips and methods for the student to implement in their practice during the week, which they will record in a notebook and bring to me for the next lesson. I have extreme respect for any child who is willing to experiment with art and learn a new skill. I will never overwhelm the student to the point where the lessons would become daunting. The wellbeing of each child is the absolute priority, so I will always check up on them throughout the lesson and reassess my teaching technique to the benefit of their serenity.
