About Scott

I am a philosophy postgraduate based in London, having recently completed both my BA and MA degrees at UCL. My interest in philosophy began in my teens, through my interest in religious studies. I believe that philosophy can and should be read for pleasure, as well as for academic purposes, and have found my studies enlightening in other areas of my life. Philosophy is fundamentally a dialogue. As such, my tuition encourages active participation, engaging students in a debate with the aim of fostering independent thought and the development of new ideas.

Tuition in academic philosophy focuses on three key areas: 1. Content revision and understanding - developing an in-depth understanding of key philosophical concepts and schools of thought and learning to apply these ideas to relevant examples. 2. Reading methods - reading philosophy can be overwhelming. As such, tuition will work on improving the ways in which we read philosophy, learning to do so efficiently while picking out key details. 3. Essay-writing techniques - developing argumentation techniques and encouraging students to develop counter-arguments to their own positions, guiding the student's voice towards a clear and compelling argument. Lessons can be flexible. 1hr sessions are preferred, but 2-4hr sessions are possible for lessons which require more detail and attention, such as essay-planning. 30min sessions are possible for some topics such as logic, but not practical in most cases. Where relevant, all students will receive copies of my in-depth revision notes, as well as problem sets (for logic) and practice short essay questions. These cover A-level and undergraduate philosophy.
