I have ten years experience as a programmer. I have been a math tutor at Cuyahoga Community college for the last two years. I also have worked giving individual tutoring lessons in Microsoft office this year. I have been teaching college courses for the last twenty years.

I truly believe that an instructor cannot really motivate students. However, one must guard against, and be very aware, not to demotivate students. Every student learns differently and should be given a lot of slack to learn in the way that is best for them and not be forced to adhere to some predefined philosophy. Good rubrics are very important in grading to try and make things very consistent and be fair to all. Consistency, fairness, honesty and creating a proper learning environment are probably the most important attributes that an instructor must try and create. I tend to give my classes a lot of freedom to learn in the way that is best for them if they are not disturbing the class. I do not care a lot about what they choose to do in the classroom. It generally works well to treat adult students like adults and only force them into line when they prove that they cannot handle it, particularly when they are not mature enough.
