About Ashley
The best parts about being a teacher were always the lessons, interacting with students, witnessing their growth, watching them gain confidence, get curious, and improve at something they initially didn't think they'd be good at. These extremely rewarding experiences are why, even though I moved from education to research, I still want to continue teaching.
I will be honest: I do not have the entire textbook and mark scheme memorised (at least not for now). There will be gaps in my knowledge too. But I have the tools to facilitate your learning, find resources, teach you how to think critically. To think with you, not for you. And I would love for you to challenge me too!

My teaching is built on neuroscience-based pedagogical methods learnt from my experience as a teacher. Specifically, I use the MAPA (Modelling, Assess, Practice, Assess) cycle as the framework for each concept. Heavily student-centred, the modelling stage uses scaffolding, dual-coding (visuals + text), and concrete examples to gradually build knowledge schematics in students' short-term memory. The first assess stage allows me to identify misconceptions and knowledge gaps. The practice phase allows active recall and facilitates transfer from short-term memory to long-term memory. This stage also provides an opportunity for students to practise exam-style questions and familiarise themselves with the mark scheme. The last assess stage informs me whether I need to re-model the concept.
I employ incremental questioning techniques. Starting from short, recall questions to build student confidence and keep them engaged. Then, gradually increase question complexity to assess deeper understanding and facilitates active thinking, where necessary, I provide prompting.
