About Toby
I’m a Master’s student in Biochemistry at the University of Nottingham with a real passion for teaching and supporting students to reach their potential. At GCSE, I achieved eight grade 9s and one grade 8, and at A Level I earned three A*s in Biology, Chemistry, and Business. I have lots of experience tutoring GCSE students both online and in person and am confident teaching all exam boards, particularly AQA, OCR, and Edexcel. What sets me apart is my deep understanding of exam mark schemes and how to use them effectively. From my own experience of achieving top grades and through tutoring, I know exactly how examiners award marks and where students often lose marks. I teach students how to structure answers to gain every possible mark, whether that’s mastering the precise wording examiners look for or developing strategies to tackle challenging questions. This approach helps high-achieving students unlock their full potential while giving those aiming to pass the confidence and tools they need to succeed.

My lessons are structured yet flexible, designed to keep students engaged, confident, and making steady progress. We usually begin with a quick five-minute recap of previous topics or homework. I ask targeted questions to check understanding, clarify misconceptions, and ensure students have a solid foundation before moving on. The main part of the lesson focuses on explaining and consolidating the day’s topic, often revisiting material the student has already covered in class. I break complex concepts into manageable steps, using diagrams, clear explanations, and real-life examples to make ideas easier to grasp, encouraging questions throughout and checking understanding as we go. Once the topic is fully understood, we solidify learning with practice questions, often from past papers, which help students apply their knowledge and develop exam skills. I guide students through each question, explaining model answers, highlighting common mistakes, and teaching strategies to tackle difficult problems. Towards the end of the lesson, we review key points and exam technique, helping students structure answers effectively and maximise marks. Finally, a short quiz or discussion wraps up the session, consolidating learning and identifying areas for further improvement. This approach ensures students not only understand the material but also build confidence in applying it and performing at their best in exams.

Perfect! Toby was brilliant always on time and very enthusiastic about the sessions. Prior to Toby teaing hamzah was not keen on the sciences however Toby changed all that and got him to understand content and techniques which was the biggest factor. I have recommended other people to Toby and wish him the best as always.
