About Tony
I am a UK-based independent filmmaker and educator with a passion for helping young people find their voice through storytelling. I have experience working for all the UK broadcasters and have won awards for documentary films. Alongside my current work for the BBC I support all abilities as well as GCSE and BTEC students in developing the practical and creative skills needed to succeed, to build confidence and produce compelling media content.
This course suits absolute beginners of all abilities - anyone who wants to develop narrative and technical skills or those working towards a qualification. Every voice matters.

Everyone has a story worth telling — including you. Whether you want to express something important, reflect on a life event, or simply try your hand at creative filmmaking, this class gives you the tools to turn a personal experience into a compelling short film. The course is aimed at teens and young adults interested in self-expression, digital storytelling, and filmmaking.
The teaching style is inclusive, calm, encouraging and visually led, drawing on experience of teaching undergraduates and mentoring rookies. Length of lessons can be adjusted to suit and are a mixture of person to person communication, demonstrations and examples on screen, editing feedback and creative brainstorming. You will learn and produce content you can be proud of.
Course Structure (6 lessons + 1 final project)
1.
What is personal storytelling is and why it matters
Real-world examples: short docs, vlogs, personal films
What you’ll need (camera/phone, editing software, quiet space)
2.
Finding Your Story
Prompts: “What matters to me?”, “A moment that changed me”
Writing exercise: Build a 60-second story arc (beginning–middle–end)
Story structure: The emotional arc vs. the narrative arc
3.
Planning Your Film
Storyboard basics (using simple templates or sketching)
Choosing your visual style (diary-style? cinematic? interview-led?)
Locations, lighting, and sound: DIY-friendly tips
4.
Filming Techniques for Personal Stories
Shot types and their emotional impact
Interviewing yourself or others
Natural lighting and mobile setups
Tips for capturing B-roll that supports your story
5.
Editing with Intention
Editing for emotion, not just continuity
Free editing tools (DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, iMovie)
Adding music, voiceover, titles
Colour and pace as storytelling tools
6.
Publishing Your Story
Exporting and uploading basics
Where to share: YouTube, Vimeo, school platforms, social campaigns
Reflecting on your voice and what you’ve learned
