About Shellie
I have many years of experience teaching reading comprehension and writing in public schools. After teaching elementary for my first ten years, I have spent the last twenty years teaching middle school reading and language arts. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education with a specialization in reading and English from UT Tyler. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, making pottery, and playing with my grandkids.

I use proven strategies for teaching inferencing questions for reading comprehension. I teach my students how to reason in order to eliminate the wrong answer choices and how to justify their answer choices. Being able to explain how you know the answer is crucial, so I have my students write to explain.
If your child struggles with fluency and decoding words (which greatly affects their fluency), they may benefit from instruction in phonics. I have several years of experience using an intensive instruction method and can help them with decoding unfamiliar words as well as improve their comprehension. In order to be able to comprehend what is read, they must be able to read it.
I know what the STAAR writing expectations are and can help your child improve in their written responses for the STAAR. The essay (the ECR) is almost worth 20% of the entire STAAR test score, so this can really make an impact on that.
