About Karen
Hi! I'm an undergrad at King's College London, studying a bachelor's Music Degree. I love bass, and am super passionate about music in general. I figured out that I want to be a music teacher when I left my tutoring job when moving to uni and realised I still wanted to teach. I have been working with kids for several years, and taught music at a primary school for a couple years also. When I saw my students really enjoying their instrument and making progress, it reminded me of how fun it is picking up an instrument and I wanted to pass that on to more people. I picked up bass after quitting violin, and really fell in love with the instrument. At the moment, I am a gigging musician and play for independent artists at their live performances. I have extensive knowledge of the Trinity grading curriculum, as that is where I took my grades up to Grade 8 (unfortunately there is no diploma for bass yet) and of the ABRSM music theory exams. The lessons will cover a wide range of techniques, from finger style to tapping, slap bass and harmonics. However, the curriculum will entirely depend on what the student is most interested in learning, as I understand that engagement and fun in lessons is the most important thing when learning an instrument. In the first lesson, for new bassists, we'll talk about what exactly you want to learn and why, then we can take a look at your music taste and learn how to play one or two songs after covering the basic techniques. For existing bassists, the first lesson will help me ascertain your skill, and find out what the next steps are in your learning, as well as what your weak points are and the most important skills to work on. From there, we'll work on a range of songs and techniques to ensure you progress smoothly and steadily until you're ready to blow your friends and family away with your playing.

I’ve had a few lessons with Karen, and she has a very unique method of explanation that makes bass very easy to pickup. She has the knowledge to teach advanced topics and the understanding to explain and teach it to people who might struggle.
I had hired Karen to tutor my son in bass, and he is well on his way to a grade 6. He seems to be enjoying himself and also often tells us with a beaming smile that everything is explained well. Definitely worth the time and money!!
