About Michael
I've got a world of experience in teaching, having done 13 wonderful years at a public high school in Brooklyn. Some of my students were gang members, others were straightedge kids who never took their noses out of their books. All of them meant the world to me. Many, though I left that job in 2004, are still my dearest friends. I know my stuff, and I know how to teach by finding the humanity in myself, my students, and the material.
But I'm also the right choice for your tutor because I've lived a life outside teaching. Back in the mid-2000s, I decided to hit the road and see if there was more to existence than a classroom. That decision set me off on a path that led, literally, around the world. I've traveled through Europe, South America, India, and Nepal and when all was said and done, I settled in Central America. Here, in Antigua, Guatemala, I've worked as a bartender, freelance writer, and magazine publisher. Oh, then there was that short period when I was a mezcal smuggler, but that's probably best left off my resume. So, yeah, ignore that part - or hire me and find out a bit more in between our conversations on the Early Sumerians, Renaissance Artwork, or the Founding Fathers.

The first rule of teaching, so often forgotten, is that students are real people, not buckets into which a lecturer dumps information. Hire me and three things will happen: First, you and I will almost assuredly become friends. Second, you'll learn the material. Third, there will be a good bit of laughter along the way.
I can't be bothered with the bullshit formality of a standard professor/pupil relationship. People learn from people when they enjoy one another's company. It's been that way since we were hunters and gatherers in the Great Rift Valley. It will be that way long after we leave this rock for the stars. History, in that way, is all just one long conversation. Bring me on as your tutor, and we'll join the unending narrative together.
Did I mention the laughter?
Good. Without that, all else sucks.

Mike (or our Mr. T) is an extraordinary educator who has prepped class after class of HS seniors for college. No subject in the humanities is beyond his grasp. He dedicates himself to his craft and, more importantly, to his students. He is a truly exceptional as a teacher, kind-hearted and patient. Strongly recommended.
Michael is one of the best teachers that I've encountered. Before meeting him social studies was one of my least favorite subjects as I generally found it boring. However, all of Michael's classes kept the energy level high and the material exciting. He believes in his students and truly appreciates different approaches to learning. His passion for his subject is contagious, and taking a class from him will change your life and expand your perception of history. I owe a lot of my success to him.
