My Teaching Method
I believe understanding beats memorization every time. Rather than handing over formulas to be copied down, I walk through the reasoning behind each concept first — the "why" before the "how" — so that when a problem looks unfamiliar on exam day, the student can still work it out from first principles instead of freezing up. I lean heavily on worked examples: I'll solve a problem step-by-step out loud, explaining my thought process at each stage, then hand over a similar one for the student to attempt independently while I watch and correct in real time. I also make heavy use of past papers, since recognizing how a topic is actually examined is just as important as understanding the topic itself.
A Typical Lesson
Most sessions follow a simple rhythm: we start with a quick check-in on what's been covered in class recently and where the student feels shaky. From there, I introduce or review the core concept with a clear explanation and a worked example, then move into guided practice — the student attempts problems with me nearby to catch misunderstandings early, rather than let them repeat a mistake ten times. Towards the end of the lesson, we tackle a past-paper-style question under closer-to-exam conditions, and I finish with a short summary of what to revisit before next time. Lessons adapt easily if a test is coming up — in that case we shift almost entirely into targeted past-paper practice and exam technique.
What Sets Me Apart
I'm a current IB Diploma student myself, having completed my IGCSEs with a full set of grade 9s, so I'm learning at a high level in these exact subjects right now rather than recalling them from years ago — the content, the exam boards, and the pressures students are facing are all fresh and familiar to me. That closeness in age and experience also means I remember exactly which parts of a topic tend to trip people up, because I've either struggled with them recently myself or watched classmates do the same. I keep explanations patient and pressure-free, and I'm comfortable slowing right down to the smallest possible step if that's what it takes for something to finally click.
Who These Lessons Are For
I tutor Mathematics and Chemistry for students at IGCSE level and IB Diploma level (Standard and Higher Level), though the approach translates well to equivalent qualifications like GCSE or A-Level. That includes students aiming to strengthen a shaky foundation, students already doing well who want to push toward top grades, and anyone preparing for an upcoming exam or mock who needs focused, efficient revision rather than a full re-teach of the syllabus.
