About Prinay

I'm Prinay Galaiya, a first-year Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering student at UNSW Sydney. I moved here from Kenya for university, and math and physics are the subjects that got me in — the ones I've always been drawn to and keep coming back to in my degree.

Through high school I helped friends whenever they got stuck on math or science. It wasn't formal, but a pattern showed up quickly: classmates who'd sat through the exact same lessons I had would suddenly click on a concept once we worked through it together. What I care about as a tutor is finding that angle — the way of thinking about a problem that matches how you're already approaching it, rather than the one version the textbook happens to use.

I'm close enough to school to remember exactly where things tend to go wrong, and far enough along to know where the topics are leading. I hope to inspire a passion for math and physics through my lessons, while making it enjoyable.

Teaching methodology
I start by figuring out where the student actually is — what they understand, where it's breaking down, what they think they know but don't. Without that I'm just guessing what to teach. From there it's a loop: explain the concept until it clicks, work through examples together so they see the moves applied, then hand over past paper questions to test whether they can actually do it under exam conditions on their own.

The thing I try to do differently is explain from a student's perspective, not a teacher's. I tutored friends informally through high school and what worked wasn't repeating what the teacher said louder — it was finding the angle that the textbook skipped, the bit where their intuition was tripping. When someone goes from "I can follow the steps" to actually getting why it works, the questions stop being scary.

Lesson length
60–90 minutes, depending on the topic and the student. Shorter for younger students or quick check-ins before a test; longer when we're building a concept from scratch or working through a full past paper.

Experience
First-year Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering at UNSW on a full academic scholarship. Through high school I tutored friends informally across maths and the sciences — not a paid gig, but consistent, and the feedback I kept getting was that things finally made sense after we worked through them. I'm not going to oversell the experience side: I haven't run a paid tutoring business before. What I bring is recent, strong performance in the exact subjects I'm teaching, and a way of explaining that's closer to how a student thinks than how a teacher talks.

Who this is for
Primary and high school students up to Year 10, in maths and science (physics focus). Happy to work with younger students who are getting ahead or catching up. Online or in person — for in person I'm based near UNSW (Kensington), so easiest if you're in the eastern suburbs or close to a direct train line. Rate: $45/hr.
