About Mezas
As a TJ sophomore who has already taken and aced the toughest courses most students don’t see until junior or senior year, I’m not teaching from memory; I’m teaching from last semester (and sometimes last month). My recent credentials USABO Semifinalist (top ~400 nationally in biology) 5s on AP Statistics (taken freshman year), AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, and AP Seminar. I still remember exactly how confusing it felt the first time I saw epsilon-delta proofs, how overwhelming the AP Bio curriculum looked in August, or how many practice problems it took before related rates finally clicked. That super-recent experience lets me skip the fluff and take you straight to the shortcuts and insights that actually work on TJ/AP exams. Because I’m a high school student myself, there’s zero intimidation factor. I talk like a classmate who gets it, not like an adult who forgot what it’s like to be in your seat. My Approach as a Tutor & How I Teach: As a current student at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), I’ve been through the exact same rigorous courses and exams you or your child are facing right now. I know what it feels like to stare at a Calculus problem that looks impossible or to memorize an entire unit of AP Biology the night before the test. That’s why my #1 goal is to make difficult concepts finally “click” in a way that feels natural and low-stress. My Teaching Method & Techniques: Start where YOU are: I never assume prior knowledge. We begin with a quick 5–10 minute assessment (just a few problems or questions) so I can see exactly which pieces are missing. Active recall + conceptual understanding: Instead of just showing you how to solve a problem, I explain the “why” behind every step, then immediately have you try similar ones while I watch and give instant feedback. Spaced repetition & practice planning: I’ll help you build a realistic study schedule and pick the highest-yield problems so you’re not wasting time on 100 problems when 20 targeted ones would do the job. Test-taking strategy: Because at TJ (and in most competitive schools), it’s not just knowing the material – it’s knowing how to attack the specific wording and tricks on AP, SOL, or TJ admissions-style questions. A Typical Lesson (60 minutes) 1–5 min: Quick check-in + review of what you practiced since last time 5–15 min: Targeted mini-lesson on the topic you’re stuck on (clear explanation + visuals) 15–45 min: You solve problems while thinking out loud; I guide only when needed (this is where most learning happens!) 45–55 min: We go over mistakes, connect to big ideas, and I assign 5–15 focused problems for next time Last 5 min: Game plan for the week + confidence boost What Sets Me Apart I literally just aced these classes myself (USABO Semifinalist, 5s on AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, AP Statistics, etc.), so I remember the exact pain points and the fastest ways past them. I’m still a high school student, which means zero intimidation factor and I speak your language. Extremely flexible and responsive – if you’re panicking at 10 p.m. about a test tomorrow, I’ll hop on and help calm you down and prioritize.
