About Diego
Computer science has always fascinated me. My parents introduced me to it when I was just eight. At the time, I lived in Brazil and attended a small school that taught kids how to code their own games. Unfortunately, soon after I moved to the United States, allowing me just a couple of months at the school that opened the doors for my future.
I struggled during my middle-school years, not only because of the language barrier but also because I was a new student in a completely different environment. However, being able to code helped me a great deal with school work and learning. Coding demanded discipline and focus; it also required me to think outside the box at a more logical level, which in turn led me to challenge myself to understand how coding works and how I could make an impact with it.
At 15, I started working at a major STEM school, Code Ninjas, and had 14 students learning from me. At 16, I became the assistant manager — the youngest to hold such a position at Code Ninjas. It is a great responsibility, and I feel obliged to do my best for the school and my students. I know if I want to remain in this position I have to show that I am reliable, so every time I go into work I try to build a connection with the students, the parents, and with my co-workers.
Because my parents introduced me to coding at a young age, I wanted to share that opportunity with other kids. I opened a small business called Kid Teaches Kids. The main idea of the business is for the kids to be able to have the opportunity to learn how to code from someone closer to their age, giving them the chance to interact at the same generation level. And the outcome is clear: children feel more comfortable and at home with a peer rather than an adult. I have some students who have stayed with me since the opening of the business. They all have told me that they enjoy learning at Kid Teaches Kids because of three main reasons: the classes are fun, they are able to make their own games, and their teacher is also a kid, well at least that is how they see me.
As an entrepreneur with a business and a staff, yes my business is growing, I want to further educate and provide more opportunities for my students and future teachers. Kid Teaches Kids is not only meant to benefit the students but also for people who want to become teachers of computer science. Having learned coding and programming at a young age themselves, these adults will have an instinctive understanding of how kids learn.
I have learned many things throughout my journey, but the most important is that I have realized that having technical skills opens doors and levels the playing field. No matter what age, gender, class, or ethnicity, people with technical skills can succeed on the merit of their knowledge and expertise. Acquiring these skills gives a chance to people who may not have had one before.
