About Thomas
My name is Tom, I am in my third year of university, and, to be honest, I got lucky. Due to the pandemic, I did not have to sit my exams, and was consequently able to attend a Russell Group university, when I perhaps would not have been able to otherwise. However, the circumstances meant that I doubted myself a lot during the summer before beginning my university course. Over the next two years, I was granted incredible learning opportunities, including an offer to study abroad in Hong Kong. My professor there has had an invaluable impact on my understanding of history and, in turn, my worldview. History tells us not just about the particulars of an event, or the cliché of "learning about the past in order to not repeat it," but perhaps more about expanding out from the particulars to construct a larger explanatory narrative (microhistories), or recognising that, in decolonised nations, "history" is as much a subject to study as it is a tool for political resistance (nationalist histories), or appreciating theoretical history as a way to expose why we as a society act the way we do under the historical circumstances we find ourselves, and why we continue to behave this way (postmodern histories). Since starting my course, any hesitations I had about my own ability or the utility of history as a subject have disappeared. I want to help the tutee write about history with the same appreciation I have come to know.

Will provide personalised material as well as delivery to suit the needs of the tutee Am able to provide a realistic insight into university academic life and standards, including the different types of assessments that can be expected Am able to cover any historical period that the student requires and focus on synthesising these lessons to form intelligent and well-argued essays I am available to begin online immediately up to the beginning of July and from July until the beginning of September for both online and in-person delivery.
