As a student in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland, I understand that every student has a different learning style. Therefore, my teaching methods focus on personalization and interactivity, aiming to help students effectively master Chinese through creative activities and a structured lesson plan.
1. Teaching Methods:
• Communicative Approach
My primary teaching method is the communicative approach, which emphasizes learning through practical communication. In class, I encourage students to speak and listen as much as possible by creating real-life language situations. Through role-playing, dialogue scenarios, and discussions, students can better understand Chinese language structures and cultural contexts.
• Task-based Learning
I design a series of real-world learning tasks, such as ordering food, shopping, or traveling, allowing students to improve their language skills by completing these tasks. This approach enhances students’ practical application skills, boosting their confidence and interest in learning.
• Development of All Four Skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing
I emphasize balanced development of the four basic skills of Chinese. In class, there will be not only listening and speaking practice, but also reading comprehension and writing training to help students improve across all areas.
• Cultural Integration
Chinese is not just a language; it’s also an essential part of Chinese culture. In my lessons, I integrate language teaching with insights into Chinese customs, holidays, history, and more, helping students better understand and use Chinese.
2. Teaching Techniques:
• Visual Aids
I use multimedia teaching tools such as PowerPoint, videos, and images to help students visually grasp vocabulary and grammar. The combination of visual and auditory learning effectively captures students’ attention.
• Gamified Learning
To increase student engagement, I incorporate interactive games such as word chain, spelling competitions, and role-playing exercises, allowing students to learn in a fun and relaxed environment.
• Personalized Feedback
Since every student learns at a different pace, I provide individualized feedback based on each student’s performance. I use regular quizzes, assignments, and after-class tutoring to help students identify and improve areas of difficulty.
• Step-by-step Progression
For beginners, I start with basic pinyin, everyday conversations, and simple grammar. As students progress, I introduce more complex sentence structures and expressions. For advanced students, I focus on enhancing their fluency in expression and writing skills.
3. Course Length and Structure:
• Class Duration: 60-90 minutes per session to ensure students stay focused while avoiding fatigue.
• Course Structure: The courses will be divided into different levels based on the students’ progress:
• Beginner Level: Suitable for students with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese, focusing on pinyin, basic vocabulary, and simple grammar.
• Intermediate Level: Suitable for students with some foundational knowledge of Chinese, focusing on improving speaking, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
• Advanced Level: Designed for students with a strong foundation in Chinese, helping them refine their grammar, expressions, and cultural understanding.
Courses can be adjusted based on students’ needs, and can be taught individually or in small groups.
4. Target Audience:
• Age Range:
The courses can be tailored to different age groups:
• Children (6-12 years old): Lessons will focus on games and interactive activities to help children learn basic vocabulary and sentence structures in a fun way.
• Teenagers (13-18 years old): Emphasis will be placed on practical language use and cultural understanding to help students improve their proficiency in daily conversations and academic writing.
• Adults (18 years and above): Whether they are beginners or have some proficiency, the courses will be customized to meet their specific learning goals, with a focus on daily conversation, business Chinese, or Chinese culture.
• Skill Level:
The course is suitable for students ranging from beginner to advanced levels. I will tailor the lessons to meet each student’s pace and learning needs.
5. Teacher Qualifications:
• As a student in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland, I have a solid theoretical foundation in educational methods and teaching strategies, enabling me to design effective courses and manage classrooms.
• I possess strong interpersonal skills, able to interact with students and foster a positive and encouraging learning environment.
• I have practical experience in teaching Chinese, having participated in language exchange programs and Chinese tutoring, helping students from various backgrounds improve their Chinese proficiency.
This teaching plan can help you present your teaching philosophy and methods as a Chinese language instructor. Feel free to add any additional qualifications or personal experiences to further highlight your professionalism as a teacher.
