About Celine

I am a piano tutor with 5 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Music Education alongside a post-graduate certificate in Piano Pedagogy from a specialist summer intensive program. I have taught over 165 students and I have a particular interest in the science of motor learning as applied to piano technique — I have read extensively in this field and apply research findings directly to how I structure practice recommendations and lesson sequences. My students consistently progress faster than peers taught by conventional methods, which I attribute to my emphasis on efficient, physics-informed technique from the earliest stages. I also teach music theory to students across all instruments through a separate set of workshops that I run termly.

My piano teaching is built on a systematic approach to technique that I developed from studying the Taubman Method alongside more traditional pedagogical frameworks, and this gives my students an understanding of the physics of piano playing that most tuition never provides. I address arm weight, rotation, and lateral movement from the very beginning rather than treating them as advanced concepts, because a student who understands how the arm and torso support the fingers from lesson one never develops the tension habits that plague so many intermediate players. My theory curriculum is closely integrated with repertoire — every chord type, scale degree, and harmonic function is taught in the context of music being studied rather than as isolated theory. Sight-reading in my studio is treated with the same seriousness as repertoire performance, and students work through a graded sight-reading program in parallel with their pieces, with timed assessments monthly to measure progress. I have developed a chord inversion workout that I use with every student from early intermediate level — playing the same chord progression through all inversions and positions establishes keyboard geography and harmonic understanding simultaneously. Adult students in my studio receive explicit instruction in how to practice efficiently within the time constraints of a working adult life — 20 minutes of focused daily practice with clear daily targets outperforms two unfocused hours, and I teach students to design their practice rather than simply sitting at the piano. Examination preparation in my studio includes extensive work on the aural component, which many candidates underprepare, and I have developed exercises that improve aural test performance rapidly. Students who are preparing for specific piano examinations are given a twelve-week preparation calendar that manages workload across all required areas. My approach to memorization is analytical — students understand the harmonic and structural logic of pieces before committing them to memory, making memory failures far less likely. My teaching goal is a student who practices purposefully and performs confidently.
