About Joy

Learning math is very personal to me. I grew up with my own learning struggles, and tutoring helped me overcome them all. I learnt the importance of application, practical understanding, and how to love to learn.

I first began tutoring when I was in middle school and loved to find creative ways to help my fellow classmates. I then went on to get a business degree, with a focus in accounting. I graduated and decided not to pursue accounting because my love for business and learning was better served in strategic consulting. The essence of consulting is to learn your customer/business, provide valuable information to them in a way they can best understand it, and help them apply it for success.

This is the same mindset I apply to tutoring. I learn about my student, I provide valuable and helpful information to them in a way that they can best understand it, and I help them apply it to their own lives in a way that they can succeed.

Problem solving is my passion, and I first grew the love for it in math. I have experienced tutors that were helpful to me, and some that weren't as much. This taught me different styles of tutoring and how important it is to take the time to make your style effective for your student. I am forever thankful for the tutors that helped me personally and that is why I get excited to be able to pass it forward and bring about the same value in my students.

Math is so much more then adding, subtracting, multiplying, etc. Math is about being able to use numbers to solve problems in various aspects of life. And overall--it should be fun! Tutoring sessions with me with include a very personalized approach with a focus on understanding and enjoyment.

About the lesson

My teaching style is rooted in understanding how my student learns. Not every student is the same, and although school teaches the foundations of what should be learnt, tutoring provides a personal approach that is tailored towards the student.

Starting at a young age, it's important for students to learn the mindset to learn in a practical way--not just to finish homework and get good grades.

I will take the time to understand my students and learn their learning style. We will work together to identify this. I am happy to help with homework or general math topics. Either way, I make sure that my student learns why math is practical and how to see it as an important tool for the rest of their life.

The mindset to learn starts at a young age, and I enjoy working with elementary students because it is a time to build strong foundations in basic math. If the foundation is strong and the mindset to understand is built, students will go on to succeed in higher levels of math and usually grow to enjoy learning in general.
