About Jade
I am a Spanish tutor with 5 years of experience and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Musicology — a combination specifically designed to support the music-based teaching approach I had already begun to develop. I have taught over 160 students and I am an enthusiastic amateur salsa dancer and a regular attendee of Latin music concerts and festivals, which keeps my relationship with Spanish music culture genuinely alive rather than academic. I write an occasional blog on Spanish language learning through music that has attracted a small but engaged readership and several of whose posts have become the basis of lesson materials I use with students.

My Spanish teaching uses music as its primary vehicle and I have developed a comprehensive methodology that makes Spanish music — in all its extraordinary variety across genres and countries — the cultural and linguistic foundation of every lesson. I begin by building a playlist with each student based on their existing musical tastes, because the emotional connection to music is the most powerful motivator in this approach and it must be genuine to sustain the investment learning requires. Lyric analysis is the primary language development activity — students work through Spanish-language song lyrics with attention to vocabulary, grammar structures, regional language variants, and cultural references, and this close reading of authentic artistic language develops linguistic competence at multiple levels simultaneously. Pronunciation through singing is taught as a specific technique — singing along with recordings is one of the most effective pronunciation development tools available because it forces the student to produce the rhythm, stress, and sound quality of the target language at native tempo and with emotional investment. Spanish music history and cultural context — the origins of salsa in New York Puerto Rican communities, the political significance of nueva canción, the cultural complexity of flamenco's relationship to gitano identity — is woven throughout the curriculum because language is always embedded in culture. Grammar structures are introduced through the constructions that appear most frequently in music — the past subjunctive in romantic ballads, the imperative in dance instructions, the diminutive forms in Latin American pop — because grammar encountered in emotionally meaningful language is retained far more effectively. I use music videos alongside audio recordings to provide visual cultural context. My teaching goal is a student whose Spanish learning is inseparable from their love of Spanish music.
