About Jim

I started my songwriting career about 15 years ago, after having been a professional musician for all of my adult life. I went back to University and gained a Ba in Commercial Music and from there a Masters in Songwriting and Music.
I am also a published songwriter and release records on a regular basis. I have collaborated with other writers over the years and am keen to pass on my years of experience to up and coming writers and musicians whether they are motivated by the fun aspect of writing and creating, or seeking to hone their skills as serious songsmiths.

About the lesson

I usually work online with my students, and offer a bespoke service tailored to my students needs and abilities. We examine different facets of the songwriting process, and I forward the lesson plan to my students as a pdf file beforehand so that they can look over and prepare if they wish to. Titles of my lesson plans include- "Don`t Forget The Hook!" , "Songs As Stories" and "Writing To A Brief". We will initially examine some theoretical aspects of the specific songwriting process in question by showing exemplars on Youtube or performing them on guitar myself. The student will then go on to tackle the brief set at the beginning of the lesson.
Online lessons typically last 1hour.
I have years of performing and recording experience and have performed all over the world as a touring musician.
I have a Masters Degree with Distinction in Songwriting and Music from the University of the West of Scotland, where I won the University Court Medal for Music in 2019.
I also currently teach Songwriting Workshops at Glasgow University Short Courses.
I can tailor my lessons to fit all levels of experience, from complete novices to experienced writers wishing to refine their craft.

Over the years, I had seen Jim perform as a member of BMX Bandits and The Soup Dragons and I owned several of his solo records. I took his University of Glasgow short course earlier this year. I found it informative, invigorating and very enjoyable. A wide range of aspects of songwriting were covered - e.g. subject matter, middle 8s, collaboration. Jim was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
I am sure Jim's input will kick start your songwriting. I am happy to give him my recommendation.
