Let's start with a basic Pythagoras theorem
The theory mathematically
Hypotenus sq=Adjacent sq + opposite sq
This theory is only applicable in a right angled triangle
In a right angled triangle, the side facing the 90degree angle is the hypotenuse; the included angle and the 90degree both rest on the adjacent while the side facing the included angle is the opposite
In a question, a right angled triangle has its hyp. as 5cm, opp 4cm, calculate the unknown side
The solution
As we all know a triangle has 3 sides, since this is a right angled triangle we can apply Pythagoras theorem to get the unknown side
Hyp.sq=adj sq+ opp as
Therefore 5sq=adj sq +4sq
25= adj sq + 16
By collecting like terms
25-16= adj sq
Adj sq=9
Therefore adj(unknown side)=sq root of 9
=+3 or-3
But since the side of a triangle can't be -3cm, we have the unknown side as +3cm
